Goodnight Bambina

A scratchy woven hat sits on my head
as I slide down the snowed hill, when my
head smacks a branch. Tears flood my eyes,
when you put me by a fire. A tender kiss
rested on my head. “Close your eyes
and go to sleep, Bambina.”

Reruns of That’s 70s Show cover
the screen, cozily wrapped in a
thick blanket. My head sits gently
on your boney shoulder. A whisper
fills the room. “Close your eyes,
and go to sleep, Bambina.”

Nurses leave the room again, as
clock strikes one. Dark heavy bags
grow under my eyes as I quickly reach
for another slip of coffee. Your skeleton
hand wraps around mine. “Close your
eyes, and go to sleep, Bambina.”

Bone white fabric matches your
skin. Lips delicately painted on
as a soft pink sits on your cheeks.
My lips hit your icy forehead one
last time. “Close your eyes
and go in peace, Nonna.
